The Senate can be a bulwark against severe cuts to environmental programs proposed by the Trump administration and House Republicans. Our US Senator Dianne Feinstein is in a key role as the ranking Democratic member of the Senate Appropriations sub-committee on Energy and Water Development. While the House Appropriations Committee has passed an anti-environment appropriations bill , the Senate Appropriations sub-committee has approved a budget which would increase funding for the Department of Energy overall by $630 million, including a record $330 million for the clean energy research grant program ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy).
In contrast, the bill passed by the House Appropriations Committee would significantly cut funding for federal clean energy programs, cutting the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy by $980 million, and eliminating ARPA-E. The House bill would also cut funding for Energy Star (under EPA) by 40%.
